Simply Superior
As a 23 year former Navy professional, I am used to keeping things neat and tidy. Now, as a stay at home father the circle continues. I purchased the DC44 Animal along with the home cleaning kit. After doing a lot of reading and weighing the pros and cons, I decided to take the plunge. AGAINST the judgement of the boss, (wifey) I ordered the product. The packaging from Dyson was displayed in an easy to remove format without unneeded extras. The directions were simple to read and understand with the photos being an added bonus. After the charge cycle, I used the unit to vacuum my entire couch and beneath the cushions and it worked as advertised, I did not have to make more than one pass to suck up debris. I then used the motorized unit and wand attachment on my hardwood floors and kitchen tile with the same results. Although you must hold the trigger depressed to provide power it was easy and also saved battery power. This unit is very well balanced and the tool kit makes other cleaning tasks quick and effortless. I purchased this unit to assist in light duties, it is not designed in my opinion to tackle extremely large square footages but for every day sweeping and so forth, this unit eliminates this requirement. With the exception of the price I would definitely recommend this unit to assist in day to day chores. Excellent product!

Engineers, PLEASE LISTEN!!!!
Trigger is hard to hold. It's heavy, probably because of the battery. I use it for light cleaning. What I do love is that it picks up the fine dust. What I absolutly HATE is the battery life. It started off with a 20 min life and deteriorated ever since after charging. I wish this dyson has the option for a cord with a better trigger. It was great when I first got it. I really like the style because I don't have to lug a canister and I'm able to get under the couch and various other types of furniture. I WANT A CORDED OPTION!!!

    Overpriced junk
This DC44 Animal started acting up by six months and now at a few days past a year it is dead. It has to do with the trigger switch as I told their tech support but they acted like I was an idiot. Now I'm out $300 + dollars and own a piece of plastic junk.

    Better than I ever imagined!
Yes, you have to hold the trigger down. However, the power seems to last forever because of this. It doesn't run 20 minutes from the time you turn it on. It runs 20 full minutes of you holding the trigger. I could not believe how long this lasted. Now I find any excuse I can to vacuum. I also found that it never kicks debris back at you. With having two kitties and litter every where at all times, I'm used to being pelleted when I vacuum. Not anymore!!! In addition to that, I have a bad back. Previously I had a small cordless vacuum that broke down into a Dirt Devil type handheld so I could hold it over my head or do the stairs. It didn't have the power I needed and it was still awkward. I gave up on the stairs. At least until we got the DC44. I vacuumed two flights of stairs with no problems at all. My back is fine and I'm ready for more. The suction doesn't feel uber powerful on your hand like a Shop Vac tends to but it did major damage on the debris on the floor I can't even see. We have stored our Shop Vac for wet vacuuming only as the DC44 has covered the dry. When the battery is running low, there is a light that flashes when you have one minute left. It doesn't dwindle and die a dramatic theatrical death. It just stops. I haven't found the need to have a second battery as a back up but am open to it. I think I would only need a second battery for the hard core seasonal cleanings. Family reviews of Dyson have always been high and recommended. I knew I would like it, I just had no idea how much I would love it!! What a great product! Already recommending it to friends and figuring out which family member needs it for Christmas. The only thing we are hunting for now is a way to store the additional tools we purchased for pet grooming and the like. It would be great if there was something available to snap them into like the two that came with the DC44. Perhaps there is, we just haven't found it yet. You will not regret this purchase.

Please put a locking mechanism on the trigger
I LOVE this vacuum! It is the best for picking up dog hair! This is my second Dyson Animal. I specifically purchased the DC 44 because the run time is longer than my DC35. The 20 minute run time allows me to complete my daily vacuuming and has enough power to get up all the dust, dirt and pet hair in my house. I rarely ever use my large vacuum anymore. HOWEVER, I wish there was a locking mechanism on the power button. I have developed a nasty callous on my trigger finger from having to hold down the power button the entire time. That is my only complaint. I would gladly purchase another Animal if Dyson would add a locking mechanism.

    Excellent Vacuum
My wife and I are retired and have bad backs and it is a chore to do the vacuum cleaning in our three story house. We have two Golden Retriever dogs that shed a lot in the Spring and late Fall. I got tired of dragging the big corded vacuum cleaner around the house every day, and began my search for an easier way. My wife wasn't enthusiastic about the idea of a cordless vacuum, but we looked at them at COSTCO. The Dyson 'DC44 Animal' was exactly what I was looking for. My wife still was not on-board with the idea, but since she was going to visit her sister in Florida for ten days - and she wanted a new camera for the trip, she agreed we would both get our new toys... She used the DC44 once and now I can't get it away from her. She does the heavy duty cleaning with the old corded vacuum (actually we have a cleaning lady every other week) and we use the DC44 for quick cleanups in the a.m. and p.m. It is GREAT and we highly recommend it to our friends and relatives. We had no problem with the trigger issue. But we do plan to get an second battery so it can be charged and available when the original battery runs down. Buy one for yourself, you will love it !!

    Trigger Happy?
I was going to write a review about the trigger but it seems that topic has been well covered. Now for the solution: Loop a rubber band around it - not enough to make it run, but enough to give you a squeeze assist. If you want constant run, they make rubberized, bendable, tie-wrap type devices - I use them for extension cords - these will keep you in constant on mode. Agreed, for $400 one would hope this would have been an option. Now the directions. I can read. I submit that anyone who can afford $400 for a cordless vacuum can also read. I appreciate the fact that the product is sold in many countries but for $400, print a manual in prose in a half dozen popular languages and include the pictures for everyone else...

    Fatal Flaw
The Dyson DC44 is the most powerful vacuum cleaner I have ever used. My hardwood floors have never looked better...it literaly picks up every speck of dust and the sleek design makes it easy to get to every spot and it's quick to finish an entire room. The absolute best for stairs and furniture. However... I would return it if I could because of its fatal flaw -- there is no on switch. You cannot finish a couch without switching hands because it's extremely uncomfortable to hold the button down the entire time. With such an innovative product with extreme suction it doesn't make sense that it would not include an on/off switch. Trust me... if I'm vacuuming... I want it on....especially for the amount of money I paid for this! I hope Dyson provides a 100% discount to everyone who purchased the DC44 when the new version with an on/off switch comes out.

    The Animal
The fantastic thing is that it's like a dust-buster that actually works. The suction is great for touch-ups and it's easy to keep at-the-ready for quick use. Unfortunately, the focus groups did not suggest a more ergonomic hand grip, however, as it's very awkward to have your finger down on the square design. The finger rest is sticks out too far so that the finger tip (that must be held down to trigger the motor) is at a really uncomfortable angle. I can't imagine using the entire battery charge with that discomfort. In addition, as the trigger must be pressed the whole time, it seems to push my thumb joint up to meet the top of the motor compartment. It's a fantastic appliance except for this, and I only write because these corrections would seem so easy to correct; it would truly make this a perfect vacuum.

    I love my Baby Dyson!
I purchased this vacuum 4 months ago to help clean our 1200 sq. ft. of marble floors. I use it twice a day in our high use areas such as door entrances and around the kitty litter boxes. I also use it to quickly pick up dry spill such as coffee grounds. I love that it is cordless so I can quickly move from one area to another and don't have to worry about plugging in or tripping over a cord. It is powerful enough to pick up the fine layer of dust and sand that accumulates so quickly on floors. It also works to clean up the top layer of debris on area rugs. It is a broom-vac so it does not replace a regular vacuum but it does extend the length of time between major cleanings. I used to have to lug out Big Daddy once a week; now I only need to every 3-5 weeks depending on time of year. The only thing I would change is the power button. It is very annoying that I have to continually push on the power button to make it run. I have issues with carpal tunnel so my hands tire very quickly. The battery may last for twenty minutes but I wouldn't know it since my wrists only last about 5 minutes. I frequently need to take breaks during my Baby Dyson sessions. If Dyson could come up with a post-production attachment/switch that does the pushing on the button for you I would change my rating to a five star. I still recommend the vacuum to everyone I know though. In fact, I purchased one for my in-laws for Christmas. I also recommend that when purchasing this vacuum to buy an extra filter. I need to wash mine about every two weeks since I use it so much. Unfortunately, it takes 3-4 days for the filter to dry. Since I can't go 3-4 days without my Baby Dyson I bought a second filter to use when the first one is drying. Happy Vacuuming!
