My Magellan 5520-LM had a manufacturer's defect
Magellan sent me an RA to send it back. However, at first they sent a refurbished unit to replace it. I got right on that!! Now I have to use my RA to send back both units. This unit has more good things about it than are listed in the add. It has Speed trap camera warnings built in. You do not have to buy an additional subscription like you do with other units. I really do wish that I would have had the cash to shop their more expensive units but I am happy with what this one has to offer for the time being. About the defect, Things happen. It is nobody's fault. I don't blame anyone. It just makes life interesting. Read about all of the products that they have on their website before you pick one. The most expensive may not be the one that you need. Have a great day!

Unreliable
I have had two Roadmates and I gave one as a gift to my son. Having said that I would not buy another one, particularly after what happened this last weekend. Roadmates have always had their quirks but for the most part they are reliable and have desireable features which take a learning curve to learn to use. I like the way Roadmate talks you through the route with some exceptions. One is that whenever you approach a freeway interchange, it starts telling you “leaving current road” and it will ding as you hit the junction when in fact you are not “leaving” the current road but staying on it. So why the false signal which is particularly confusing at night when highway signs are difficult to read? It has caused me on several occasions to leave my route and then having to turn around to get back on my right route. When I leave my house, sometimes Roadmate does not pick up where I am and wants to start my trip at the last place I was at. Another problem is that sometimes after I have punched in my destination, and hit the Go button, I do not get any signal after I am driving that indicates that Roadmate is working, such as a signal “Proceed to xxxxxx.” That causes me to have to stop and check that Roadmate is working particularly if I don't see any movement on the screen (which I rarely watch while drinving). One thing that I have found useful on Roadmate is that it adjusts. I often know what the best route to take than does Roadmate so when I ignore instructions from Roadmate to make a left turn, etc., it tells me to make a U-turn, or gives other directions which are not useful because I know a better route particularly in my local community. But once I settle in on the route Roadmate will finally adjust to it and give me appropriate directions. But last weekend was a disaster as far as Roadmate is concerned. It cost me a lot of wasted time because of bad directions. I set my destination for a hotel in Lake Arrowhead but Roadmate would not allow me to enter the hotel's address. It allowed me to put in the road name but would not allow me to put in the street number which the hotel had supplied me and was easily located on Google Maps. However, under hotels in the Points of Interest, the hotel was located so I punched it in. While I was travelling east on Highway 18, Roadmate told me to turn left at a signal on the Lake Gregory Road. I thought this was odd because my hotel was on Highway 173 which is the usual route into Lake Arrowhead and besides that was the address Roadmate had for the hotel. But I stupidly decided to rely on Roadmate and made the turn. Roadmate then led me to Highway 189 which is a very slow route and I eventually reached Lake Arrowhead Village. But Roadmate did not lead me to my hotel. Instead it took me five miles east of my hotel past Cedar Glen to a location on Highway 173 where there was a residence. I drove around looking for the hotel and eventually drove back to Arrowhead Village where the hotel was located, losing over an hour so that I had to check in quickly, didn't have time to eat dinner because I had to check in at another location a half hour away for a seminar. Making it worse, on my way back I programmed Roadmate to go to a particular gas station. It did a good job of getting me there on the way to Lake Arrowhead. Not so on the way back. One thing I have liked about Roadmate is that it always gives you a warning long before you reach an exit so that you have plenty of time to be in the right lane. Not this time. I am in the car pool lane and suddenly I get a bing to leave the freeway. I see my exit go by. Then it told me to turn around at the next exit which I did and darned if it didn't misdirect me again as to the proper turnoff (which surprised me because the first time a few days earlier, it did it right.) Another problem I have with Roadmate is that when you use the Points of Interest to locate a store, if that store is in a shopping center, particularly a very large shopping center, Roadmate will tell you that “You have arrived” but you may have difficulty finding your destination within that shopping mall area. Roadmate needs to get the exact GPS coordinates of its Points of Interest so that it can direct you to the precise location instead of leaving you to wander all over the area trying to find the business you want to visit. The first time I went looking for this particular gas station, I drove around for more than 20 minutes before I found it.

    Magellan
Not happy with this item, returning to the store will not hold a charge. Charged overnite and shows only two bars and the level of programing is not very easy to program. checked all the reviews and decided to try it, going back to my tomtom much easier to navigate.

    Almost useless
This Magellan is the replacement for a ten year old Tom Tom that was stolen from me. Happily anticipating a new, updated GPS, I am very disappointed that this one will not find my home or work addresses which were simple for Tom Tom. I tried unsuccessfully to register and log in to Magellan's website thinking the maps just needed updated. The website is atrocious and all I got after several days was a phone number that referred me to a non-customer service number. But I was told that the map installed is the most current. I followed directions in the owner manual and set up preferences, making sure the volume was LOUD. When I tested the unit at MAX volume, the voice coming from it is as loud as a whisper. Possibly audible in a very quiet car on a smooth, deserted road with windows up driving slowly. That's not my situation. On the good side, the included windshield mount is well designed and works.

    Magellan
I had Magellan GPS a long time ago. When I switched to a different companies brand it never did what it was supposed to do. The Magellan is wonderful and love it.

    Magellan GPS
Bought this as a birthday gift. He really likes it and has had no problem finding the various places he needs in order to deliver yellow pages phone books.

    Hard to hear
Generally it is a good product, and has the same functionality as Garmin devices that I am more familiar with, but it is hard to hear with maximum volume.

Hard to connect to Magellan updates
Could not get hooked into Magellan online software for updates etc. Magellan now has 2 systems for this, an older version, and a new version for their newer models. I could not sign into either one, and the tech I contacted could not either, and I have a strong background in computer systems. Took this unit back and bought a Magellan 5320-LM which is also a newer model GPS which had the latest maps and software installed. This 5320 model worked very well for me on 3 recent trips

    Mag Roadmate RM5520
I own 2 other Roadmate GPS. Bought this as a gift. Tried it out more accurate than my other models as per my home location. The other models carry me 4 houses past. The 5520 put me at my front door. The only downfall can't add to my Content Manager acct for the map updates.
