Gore Splattering Greatness
You may have heard this game has solid gameplay, but a bit of a lackluster story. The story, at first glimpse, just seems like a branch off the Alien franchise, but there are elements that can be appreciated. For starters, I've never heard of extraterrestrial life being coalesced with religion. Without providing any spoilers, I want to also say that the game has a pretty solid and dramatic backstory. Picking up the audio and text logs is a plus if the story itself intrigues you.
Gameplay is similar to the last two Resident Evil titles. Camera is behind the shoulder, weapons and armor are upgradable, laser targeting allows strategic dismembering (which is VERY useful if you want to conserve ammunition), and of course there are physical attacks that include a heavy gunslap and powerful stomp with the foot, also useful for conserving ammo. In some rooms, the gravity level is 0, but thanks to your equipment, you have the ability to jump wall to wall, usually having to do this to overcome obstacles. Very fun.
Sequences with the aliens can be disturbing and frightening when mixed with the dark, abandoned enviroment. Monsters are incredible, ugly, and atrocious. Each part of their body is detachable. Your kills can literally be customizable, but then again, so can your deaths. The monsters on the dark space station are just as anxious to sever your limbs as you are to escape.
To finish this, I just want to say my only qualm with the game was the exploration seemed limited and linear, but not too much. Other than that, my complaints for Dead Space are nye.

Not too bad!
I enjoyed the game, although I found it very simplistic. The story line was linear and more of a shoot 'em up than a horror game. Not very original, either. There were elements from the Resident Evil series and from the Silent Hill series. Still, it was creepy and gory enough that I wouldn't let anyone under 15 play it. I was hoping for something along the lines of the first Silent Hill, which was so innovatively creepy I had trouble playing it if I was alone in the house.
I would recommend that you rent it first to see if you can handle the gore and don't mind the simplicity of the game. Also, this game is not for smaller TVs. I played it on a 29 inch and missed out on a lot because I couldn't read the smaller print on the screen. This game was obviously engineered for a widescreen, at least 36", and for very young eyes.
All in all, not too bad, but nothing to brag about.

5.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser12/16/2009The Best Game of this Generation of ConsolesDead Space is easily the best single player game you can find for this generation. When played on a high definition television set as well as a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround system, this game makes turning each and every corner in the game a breath-taking experience. There is not a game available today that contains such a wonderfully crafty environment. This game has everything you want in a game and more. Excellent sound, gameplay, and level design help to make Dead Space one of the most incredible gaming Masterpieces of our time. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. You will not regret it. My only advice: Stick to upgrading the Ripper, the Line Gun, and your original gun (Plasma Cutter)Sweendrix

5.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser10/01/2009Watch out...This game is very cool. The storyline is simple, the team members are trapped in a nightmarish space and must survive by any means. The controls are easy. you can upgrade weapons and your armor. The game looks beautiful as you are walking, EA did a great job with this game.WalMartAddict4Life

4.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser03/04/2009NIGHTMARES ON THE BIG SCREENTHIS GAME HAS THE UGLIEST MONSTERS. THIS IS THE KIND OF GAME THAT YOU WANNA PLAY IN HIGH-DEF. YOU HAVE PLENTY OF TOOLS AND TRICKS TO PULL OFF THIS SPACE ADVENTURE. BUT IT CAN GET CONFUSING BECAUSE YOU HAVE ALOT OF ROOMS AND ALOT OF OBJECTIVES. ITS DEFINETLY A CHALLENGE TO KILL THESE MUTANTS BECAUSE THEY REGENERATE !!ATRIUS
