Easy installation
The SportRack SR7040 Getaway L Roof-Mount Cargo Box, 15 cu ft only took about 10 minutes to install on the roof crossbars and it was very easy. You may need another person to help you put the cargo box onto the top of your vehicle and to adjust to the proper place to mount it. From there it is very easy, just put each u-bolt through the metal brackets underneath the cargo unit, there are 4 u-bolts in total. You may want to pre-measure the holes under the cargo unit to your crossbars to be sure that they line up. If they don't line up, you should adjust your crossbars accordingly. It looks very nice mounted and seems safe and secure. It looks like it will hold quite a bit of luggage which will free up a lot of cabin room. The only thing that was a bit difficult is closing the cargo unit, it doesn't easily give on the opposite side when you pull down and seems like it could break. I tried 2 times before realizing that it will not break and you need to pull firmly. Now that I am used to it, it is not an issue. Removing the box is just as easy as installing so I highly recommend this cargo box.

Roomy But I Needed Extra Pieces
My family and I go on vacations every year. My husband and I have three children. So, that is five of us. However, my sister and brother will from time to time travel with us as well. That makes seven of us. I am not a person that likes to fly. Therefore, I tend to try and arrange vacation spots that are within driving distances. The only problem with this is, what do we do with all the suitcases?! We are talking about four adults, two teenagers, and a ten year old's clothing for seven days or more, because we never vacation for less time than that. We have a minivan which fits a lot of stuff, but not that much stuff. There have been times when we would have to have some of our bags on our laps and down by our feet for a SEVERAL hour ride. That is not fun! So, we decided to try the SportRack SR7040 Getaway L Roof Mount Cargo Box. Well, this cargo box is extremely large. It also has a lock with a key on it, which is necessary. I really think this product is a plus for people like me. It will allow us to free up interior space while still being able to have all of our needed luggage. The one problem we came across was that this particular model requires us to go buy a kit from our car dealership in order to use the cargo box. We have a 2014 Toyota Sienna minivan and the rack on top does not go in the right direction to fit this particular cargo box. The only other problem I see is that the box does not open as wide as I thought it would. It opens like an alligator's mouth, which may be a little troublesome when something is pushed all the way back to the hinged end. However, I do feel this is a VERY useful product!

    Big enough for the whole family!
    The Large Roof Mount SportRack cargo box is the way to go to add aerodynamic storage to the top of your vehicle. When I first picked up the box shipped to me, I was immediately skeptical. How could something this light carry and protect my cargo? After I installed the cargo box on top of the roof, all doubts went away for lots of reasons. - First of all, the design of the hard shell is sturdy all on its own. Closing and locking the cover in place probably make the case strong enough to survive falling off the car while driving (although I would not want to test the hypothesis myself). - The location of the hinge in front of the case combined with the aerodynamic shape means the wind actually puts pressure on the lid to keep it closed. I have been behind cars with side mounted carriers that have come open on the road. Not a pretty site. This case could only do that if you left it open and drove in reverse. That shape should also help keep the contents dry under just about any circumstances imaginable. - The long length of the case combined with the rear opening design makes it loadable from the rear of the vehicle. - The light weight of the unit means almost anyone can mount it on top of car. - The lid is held open with spring hinges to allow the carrier to be loaded easily. The design also keeps contents dry if loading is done while it is raining. - There are enough adjustments that it should fit almost any car with an existing roof rack. - Zero tools are needed for installation (the brackets are tightened by hand). - In today's crazy world, you often do not know the real origin of a product. The actual roof top case says SportRack. The box drop shipped to me said it came from a company called Thule. If you don't know them, you should. They are one of the top aftermarket automotive cargo carrying equipment manufacturers in the world. You put their name on this case instead of the shipping container and you could double the price. Those are all of the positive points. If there is one negative it is that the tape provided to cover the mounting holes not used seems a little on the wimpy side. I had some heavy duty tape to cover the non-used holes. The tape supplied might be good enough, but I would rather make sure I had something extra durable to ensure the contents will remain dry. Overall, I would strongly recommend this case for anyone looking for a rooftop carrier. Make sure that you select the best size for you. If you get the large size "just in case," you should fill the empty space so the cargo does not slide around when you come to sudden stop or turn a corner.

    I'm Rocking with my new SportRack SR7040 Gateway!
    I received my SportRack SR7040 Gateway L Roof-Mount Cargo Box, in size 15 cu feet in Black a week ago, and I must say I'm very pleased with this item. If you're looking for extra room for items either for your car, truck and van this is the way to go with the SportRack SR7040 Getaway L Roof-Mount Cargo Box. The room inside the SportRack is enough for anything you need to haul back and forth where ever you may be going. It's the idea unite to haul items when your child(ren) have to move back and forth from college. The SportRack opens up from the back where the key lock is located and it stays open when lifted opened, so when you're done loading and unloading your items make sure it's closed and securely locked. Installing this will take 2 people to install because you're going to need someone to help you lift the unite on top of your vehicle. Also, a key thing to watch out for when installing the unite is to make sure its installed in the Center on your vehicle. If the unite is not installed in the center of your vehicle then you can block the opening of your trunk or your front hood. For the price Walmart is selling this item for is well worth the money for those buying this item. Here are the following item which comes with the unite: 1.) Parts bag-B-bolt attachment (1), 2.) U-bolt (4), 3.) Threaded knobs (8), 4.) U-bolt plate (4), 5.) Reinforcing plate (4), 6.) Vinyl hole cover (1), 7.) 2 Keys and 8.) Lid lifters (2). With this said the SportRack Gateaway L Roof-Mount Carge Box is the way to go...

    Good, lightweight box.
    I have never used a cargo box before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I really like that it is so lightweight. As a smaller female it is important for me to be able to install or remove it by myself (they do recommend that 2 people place it on car). Since I have an SUV I will need to get out a ladder to bolt it down. I wish it had some sort of quick release system. The plastic is very sturdy. The hinges hold the lid open, but it seems they could be stronger. It kind of wobbles when it's open. The seal is great, the top has a lip that fits over the bottom so it it nice and closed for sure. It's a good looking cargo box, sleek and expensive looking. Easy to read instructions. It's a nice size to hold overflow camping gear. *TIP* The box comes locked. It's kind of hard to see that the keys are taped to the bottom under the keyhole. Be prepared, it comes in a rather large box.

    Amazing space saver!
    I absolutely love this product! I have received this SportRack Cargo box and decided to put it immediately through the test to see how much I can fit in it, and I am happy to announce that this box is an amazing space saver, which I will be using during all of my trips! This cargo box is amazingly only 27 lbs in weight and it can hold up to 100 lbs of luggage, travel bags, sport or beach gear, or whatever your heart desires to fit in it! I'm pleasantly surprised that even though it is lightweight it can hold some serious weight. In fact I was able to load it with 2 luggages that can hold up to 50 lbs each and two medium size bags on top of that! This product came in a box and you don't have to worry about assembling it, as it already comes assembled and ready to be mounted on top of the vehicle with U bolt mounting that fits most racks. I love that it's already fully assembled, that means that there is no time to waste, just bolt it up to the racks , load it up with all the necessary travel items and get rolling! What I found extremely important is that this cargo box is made from UV resistant material, which means that it is going to hold its original looks without fading away and having to restore the original looks with multiple restoring products! This box is going to hold it's sharp dark color through any weather, and I love that! Additionally to that this product has a lifetime limited warranty, which is always a plus! The cargo box also has an easy 3 way accessibility, which makes it easy to load it up from both sides and the rear. One of the other features that I also love about this product is that it has a built in lock that comes with 2 keys, which makes it worry free to leave without having to worry about the safety of the contents in it. I travel multiple times per year and always bring 3 of my pets with me, having to go through different states and having to stop at different places all kinds of hours of day or night, with this cargo box having a lock I don't have to second guess safety of my belongings, plus this cargo container is an incredible space saver, which will allow me to load it up with all my bags and luggage without having to take extra space from my pets. I absolutely love this product, it is a lifesaver, especially if you travel a lot, or you have pets, or friends and family traveling with you in a vehicle, this cargo container will save you a ton of space that your pets or riders can enjoy instead.     Plenty enough room in this Cargo Box
    I am doing a review of the SportRack SR7040 Getaway L Roof-Mount Cargo Box, 15-Cubic Feet, Black. It can hold a load of 100 pounds. You must evenly space it out. The dimensions are 61"L x 37"W x 18"H. You cannot drive around in the vehicle with it empty at speeds greater than 40mph. It must contain at least 50 pounds of items in it to keep the box on top of the car. The weight will hold it down. It is held in place by the use of u-bolts. It must be closed and locked. It comes with two keys. I guess in case you lose one. It is pretty light in weight. It only weighs 28 pounds. You can open it from three sides. Open it up from the sides or in the front. It is hinged in the back. It is water resistant and not waterproof. It comes with vinyl to seal up any holes where water can get in it. It is very easy to attach to vehicles. It comes with very little hardware. I have never hooked anything like this to a vehicle and it only took me 15 minutes. You would be able to do it in less time. I take my time and make sure it is done right. It comes with very clear instructions on how to do it with pictures. I wouldn't try to put it on on a windy day. It is made to last a long time. It is made from very durable and UV-resistant HDPE material. It is very easy to take care when not in use. Just wash with soap and water and let dry before you close it up and lock it. Take off vehicle when not in use. Load up and your ready to go. I would recommend this cargo box to others.

    SportRack SR7040 Getaway L Roof-Mount Cargo Box, 15 cu ft, Black measures 61 in. x 37 in. x 18 in. (L x W x H) and offers a maximum load of 110 pounds. Please take the time to read directions ,safety precautions, limited warranty .Will need two people to install properly. This awesome carrier was delivered quickly and securely inside a plastic clear bag inside of a huge cardboard box. You might need help with it upon delivery as well. I must also let you all know even though this carrier is mostly assembled with exceptions of bolts/nuts hardware to easily install weighs only 33 pounds. Periodically check snugness of all hardware for safety before every use. Comes with two keys however, if replacement or additional keys are needed just call 1-800-238-2388 . My family and I really enjoyed this SportRack SR7040 Getaway L Roof-Mount Cargo Box, we packed our tents ,air bed , camp cooking supplies and some luggage inside and we were off and on our way! Very satisfied with all which we were able to pack inside for our camping trip. This carrier is durable and made to handle swipes from branches, bumps and general rough handling. We also used it for helping transporting job construction tools during our work week. Very easy to clean with mild soap and water. Storing your cargo carrier should be closed and latched to prevent warping.Never store items on top of carrier. Be sure to remove your carrier when it is not in use. Carrier is water resistant ,NOT waterproof! NEVER travel with carrier being empty, always make sure at least 50 pounds is inside carrier for safety. In no case ever should carrier have over 110 pounds of weight within. Has rear-opening carrier mounts via u-bolts directly to most aftermarket and factory crossbars.The SportRack is a brand of the Thule Group.     Great Way to Add Extra Storage to Your Vehicle
    The SportRack SR7040 Getaway Roof-Mount Cargo Box offers a cost effective way to instantly add additional storage capacity to your vehicle. The installations were clear and easy to follow, offering diagrams to assist the user with the process. The instructions come in English, French, and Spanish. The overall installation process was fast and easy, and the cargo box is ready for many road trip adventures. Let's talk about unboxing and first impressions. Never having owned or used a roof rack storage box before, my first thought was that this thing is big - shipped in a large cardboard box, it was bulky but not heavy. Removing from the package was easy, and the carrier came bagged in a large plastic bag. The mounting hardware was sealed in a plastic bag, the two included keys were taped to the enclosure, and the instructions were easily found. The box is made out of sturdy plastic. Opening is easy, the box arrived locked, so I removed the keys and used one to open up the lock. The box opens like a clamshell design, so once mounted, it was clear that you access the box from the rear of your vehicle. If you are able to stand on a rear bumper or the rear cabin of your SUV, this will help make access to your storage box easier. I'd imagine that vehicles with a lift rear hatch or gate will present a more difficult time accessing the box with the back door open - probably best if you close the door first then attempt to access the cargo box. After unpacking and initial inspection, I moved on to mounting the box. Although the instructions don't suggest it, I cut out some small rubber foam sheets to act as a pad between the mounting hardware and my vehicle's mounting rails so that I don't mar the finish on my vehicle's mounting rails. The instructions suggest mounting the box as far back as you can, with the rails spread as far apart as possible while still aligned to the mounting holes in the cargo box. I adjusted the position of the front rail on my vehicle, to align better with the mounting holes on the box. Placing the mounting plates and U joints in place, I tightened down the mounting nuts "finger tight", enough to ensure the box is secure. Once attached, it was fairly easy to stand on the back bumper area of the vehicle, and reach up into the enclosure to place luggage into the cargo container. We're looking forward to taking a few road trips and overnight camping trips with the cargo box, we'll probably be placing our tent, chairs, and other camping gear up there. A few manufacturer tips to be aware of, worth mentiong here. The cargo box is water resistant, but not waterproof. Indeed, I didn't see any weather sealing around the enclosure, so I'd recommend either using it only in fair weather, or placing only non-weather sensitive items up there. For example, if you're planning on hitting up the snow, maybe put sleds, skis, snowboards, etc up there. I wouldn't put actual suitcases, jackets, food items, or anything else that needs to stay dry up in the box. The manufacturer recommends putting no more than 130 pounds of material in the box, with a minimum of at least 50 pounds just to keep the box securely weighted down onto the roof. If the box is empty and you must drive somewhere, it is recommended that you drive no faster than 40 MPH. Lastly, always make sure the mounting hardware and your roof rack rails are securely fastened prior to usage. The only downside, and this would be true for any roof rack system, is that we can't fit the car in our garage with the cargo box mounted, so it will have to be removed every time we're done using it - but for gas efficiency purposes, this is probably best, as it wouldn't be practical or safe to drive around with an empty box always attached. Overall, happy with this cargo box and looking forward to taking our first road trip with it! I gave 4 stars out of 5, because the only thing I'd like for the box to have is weather sealing. However, if you're careful about what you put up in the box, it shouldn't be an issue.

    SportRack SR7040 – Affordable & Good Value
    Received this Complimentary SportRack SR7040 Getaway L Roof-Mount Cargo Box just in time to pack for a short trout fishing trip to the North Georgia Mountains. I was looking forward to evaluate the performance of this product during our trip in exchange for a comprehensive review. My Brother-In-Law, Sister, and Darlene were going to stay at a cabin on one of the best trout fishing rivers in the state. YooHoo! We were bringing our luggage, dry and refrigerated/ frozen foods, kitchen goodies, and fishing gear - lotsa' stuff. However, we enjoyed a pleasant 'comfort level' in the passenger section of the car during our trip because of the extra cargo space provided us by the use of the cargo box. The SportRack Getaway Cargo Box is shipped in a huge box and mostly assembled. Although the unpacked cargo box is not heavy, (weighs approximately 27 lbs.) it is big and clumsy too handle, 61" L x 37" W x 18" H. It took two people to place and install this cargo box on the roof-top of my vehicle. It comes with four 'u-bolts'; four threaded knobs; four 'u-bolt' plates (Inside of unit), and four reinforcing plates (bottom of cross bars) and keys for locking the back side of cargo box. The instructions for installation are included, but you can also download the owners' manual online at the SportRack website. It includes many illustrations, details for installation, warranty info, and Guidelines for safe and effective use. Installation is quick and easy, it took us an hour. Although, I can see where the furnished 'u-bolts' may not fit a lot of crossbars, especially if the crossbars are wider, or curved, where the reinforcing plates need to be installed, or, the threaded part of the 'u-bolt' is not long enough for the threaded knobs to be fastened. If that is the case you can contact customer service for assistance at the number provided in the instructions. My Brother-In-Law helped me pack the SportRack Cargo Box with our luggage, fishing tackle, ladies vanity bags, some dry-paper-goods for our stay and miscellaneous kinds of stuff, like drinks, water, and canned goods. You actually 'load' the cargo box from the sides - passenger side of my vehicle. It is rear-opening and accessible from three sides. It is simply done while standing on the passenger-side floor board, which allows total access. The SportRack Cargo Box is made of UV Resistant, HOPE (Recycled) Plastic. It may seem flimsy when it is opened for loading and unloading, but when closed and locked - it is substantial to handle the winds and speed. I used a 'trick' I learned long ago about packing things so they don't shift and rock about, which is important concerning a car, roof-top, cargo box. We used about seven - 12" diameter, inflatable, beach balls to pack in between items and around some of the sides to prevent shifting and movement. The beach balls can be inflated, or conversely, deflated to wedge in all of packed items. It is an inexpensive ($1.00 a piece) and reliable way to ensure your items do not get damaged from shifting when you turn or suddenly stop your vehicle. An unbalanced or shifting load in the cargo box can affect the handling of your vehicle. The cargo area is a generous 15 cubic feet, more then adequate for the four of us (see attached pics). After we were 'packed and loaded' I measured the distance from the road to the very top of the SportRack Cargo Box to make sure I would not have a clearance problem at any facility we may stop at. I kept that measurement ( 7' 8") handy near the dashboard during our trip. It is noteworthy to measure the required clearance of your vehicle with the SportRack Cargo Box mounted so you won't have any issues at 'drive-ins', banks, etc. Unfortunately, I could not get my car into my garage with the cargo box installed. So, be aware. On the drive up to the mountains the cargo box was pretty 'quiet'. However, when I approached speeds of 70 MPH, or over, we knew it was up there. I can only estimate that it did affect my mileage by approximately 3 to 5 miles less, but even though the cargo box was loaded, I did have two extra adults also, and heavy coolers, etc. in the cabin. Any reduced mileage from the SportRack cargo Box is not an issue with me. Since I have three Grandchildren, who live approximately 150 miles from me, and I pick them up often for stays at Grandma and Grandpa's. I am looking forward to trips so I can bring their tricycles, bikes, along with games, extra-luggage, etc. using the SportRack Getaway, Roof Mounted Cargo Box. WooHoo! I am impressed with this SportRack Cargo Box. It has a generous capacity of 15 cubic feet, and is aerodynamically designed to be as unaffected by wind-noise as possible. Although it may appear to be flimsy at first, especially when loading it, once fully packed and 'locked' this cargo box can stand-up to high speeds, cross winds, and rain. I highly recommend this cargo box for your family vacations, camping trips, and especially transporting Grand kids' 'stuff' ...
